From the Mic to Mentorship: Emerson Allen Earns Wayne Way Volunteer Award

MSD Wayne recently honored Emerson Allen with the Wayne Way Volunteer Award, recognizing more than two decades of service supporting students through the district’s WBDG radio and BDTV broadcasting programs.

For 21 years, Emerson hosted School Talk with Emerson on WBDG. For much of that time, he did so as a volunteer—without compensation and without being a district employee. Even after the program concluded, Emerson continued to give his time to help students learn the craft of broadcasting and to support the district’s media programs.

Whether assisting with field trips, helping cover major school events, or supporting student-led broadcasts, Emerson has remained a constant presence in the program. His involvement has helped students participate in meaningful community coverage, including the Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk, giving them real-world experience while highlighting issues that matter to the community.

Beyond the microphone, Emerson’s greatest impact may be the encouragement and mentorship he provides to students.

At the start of a recent school year, he spoke with broadcasting students about the importance of staying active, staying involved, and making the most of their education.

“I’m 70, and I’m still working,” he told them, encouraging students to stay curious and committed to lifelong learning.

Emerson shared lessons from a lifetime of experiences—including service as a Marine, work as a State Trooper, and roles across many different professions. Through those stories, he spoke honestly about both successes and mistakes, reminding students that growth comes from perseverance and a willingness to keep learning.

Those who work with Emerson say his authenticity and generosity leave a lasting impression.

“Emerson is one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met,” said Jon Easter, who nominated him for the award. “He cares tremendously about our students and treats them like his own. Our students—and our program—are better because of him.”

The Wayne Way Volunteer Award recognizes individuals and groups who go above and beyond to support Wayne Township students and schools.

Emerson’s dedication reflects the spirit of The Wayne Way—showing up, investing in others, and helping young people see what’s possible.

Because when a community shows up for its students, it strengthens more than schools—it strengthens the future.

We Are Wayne Great Schools. Great Community.
